How can the logic of quantum error correction shape hero visuals for marketing?


Quantum technology is difficult to visualize. Its defining mechanisms are often invisible, while the hardware alone rarely explains how it works or why it matters.

Scientific communication relies on shared knowledge and time for detail. Marketing must reach audiences without that foundation—capturing attention, communicating value, and making the technology distinctive without compromising scientific accuracy.

Created in collaboration with VN, this study translates the logic of quantum error correction into a hero visual for marketing, connecting scientific principles with a clear visual language.


Our process follows four stages:


Technology →  Principle → Visual Behavior → Visual Language
01 — TechnologyWe begin by understanding the technology and identifying the structures, relationships, and behaviors that can meaningfully inform the design.


For this independent study, we decided to focus on surface-code quantum error correction in superconducting quantum computing.


1. Superconducting qubits are physical qubits, electrical circuits susceptible to noise that can introduce errors into quantum computations.


2. Quantum error correction (QEC) protects information by encoding it across multiple physical qubits to form a more reliable logical qubit.


3. A leading approach to QEC for superconducting qubits is the surface code, where physical qubits take on different roles: data qubits collectively carry the encoded quantum state, while measurement qubits extract stabilizer information to detect errors without directly measuring the logical state.


4. These qubits and their interactions are organized into a lattice, which enables measurement qubits to check relationships between neighboring qubits.


5. Code distance (d) describes how resistant the code is to physical errors: greater distance means more errors are required to cause a logical failure.


6. Increasing code distance, for example d3 → d5 → d7, requires a larger lattice. Below the error-correction threshold, the point where the hardware is reliable enough, increasing distance makes logical errors far less likely.

02 — Principle


Once we understand the technology, we don't try to visualize all of it. Our job is to select what matters and extract the underlying logic.

From the surface code, we isolate one key relationship: below the error-correction threshold increasing code distance reduces the logical error rate, providing stronger protection for encoded quantum information.

As code distance increases (d = 3 → d = 5 → d = 7), the lattice expands to accommodate more physical qubits, enabling stronger logical protection under this condition. Google’s 2023 surface-code experiment demonstrated an initial step in this direction, with a distance-5 code modestly outperforming distance-3 codes.

We translate this relationship into a concise design principle: Protection through scale.

03 — Visual Behavior


Once I establish the principle, I define how it should behave visually.

For this marketing visual, I focus on the outcome of quantum error correction: more reliable information, rather than the mechanics of noise, errors, detection, and correction.

I translate reliability into visual stability. As code distance increases:

The structure expands and becomes denser while maintaining its underlying order.Color shifts from soft lavender through bright yellow and green to cool teal, expressing increasing protection below the error-correction threshold.

04 — Visual Language

Visual language defines how the idea takes visual form.


In this study, we develop the visual language of a single illustration outside any specific brand system, so I focus only on the elements specific to the illustration itself: form and behavior.


The form comes from the technology: the surface-code lattice provides the structural basis. 


The behavior was defined in the previous section: changes in scale, density, and color that express increasing protection while maintaining stability.


The result is a visual language derived from a real technical relationship. It does not try to simulate quantum error correction. Instead, it translates one meaningful property of the technology into a visual expression.

05 — Application


This visual language can be applied across marketing touchpoints, from websites and editorial materials to campaigns, presentations, and conference environments.
